Proper preparation, realistic expectations and overall approach to the various careers offered in the field of public service must emphasize readiness, attitude and a realistic approach to career selection.

  • Interview and assessment of each candidate. After informed consent, release and hold harmless waiver is provided, this assessment will include frank discussions regarding-  Physical agility preparation

  • Vollmer Careers will provide a panel of law enforcement experts to present the various opportunities available in the criminal justice system, share their experiences and assist in candidate preparation. Efforts will be made to link up prospective candidates with veteran law enforcement professionals to assist in coaching throughout the process.
  • Discussion/assessment of the various career opportunities to include but not be limited to:-  Police Officer
    –  Civilian Community Services Officers
    –  Corrections
    –  Communications/Dispatch Crime
    –  Scene Investigation – Forensics
    –  Administrative support positions
    –  Private Security
    –  Local, County, State, and Federal agencies
  • Testing Preparation – In 2019, Vollmer Careers will be offering a testing site to approved candidates with a national testing firm that has contracted with many law enforcement agencies. Approved applicants are offered the opportunity to test and send their test results to selected agencies at the candidates choosing. Tests are available for-  Police Officer
    –  Communications/Dispatch
    –  Corrections Non-Sworn positions

Career Development Coaching

While on-the-job training can prepare many for advancement into the various areas of specialization within the field of public service and the criminal justice system, there may be a time to take a step back and assess the areas of career development. From the technical roles,   administrative, investigative selections and supervisory and management positions, career choices are critical decision points. Coaching/mentoring will be provided by highly skilled professionals with years of experience in their respective fields.

A determination as to whether to specialize in a particular field of law enforcement or pursue a career in the supervisory and management ranks of agencies requires planning and an overall personal career assessment. Vollmer Institute offers candidates the opportunity to meet with experienced and candid professionals with decades of experience at all levels of local, state and federal agencies. This assessment will include:

  • Evaluation of existing experience level
  • Exploration of potential opportunities
  • Assessment of Leadership and management style diagnosis via administration of selected exercises

Upon completion of the assessment, an individual pathway to success will be developed for each candidate. While the Vollmer Careers method cannot guarantee success in the candidate’s efforts, a realistic evaluation can produce positive career results for our candidates. Our pathway includes but is not limited to:

  • Oral Board coaching with feedback
  • Career development recommendations regarding the pursuit of selected assignments
  • Recommended reading list based upon career choice selection
  • Exercises to determine leadership and management styles
